Sedation Dentistry in Folsom, CA

If you have a fear of going to the dentist, you’re not alone. Approximately 75 percent of Americans experience some level of fear when facing a dental appointment.

Unfortunately, that means many of them put off going to the dentist until their teeth are in very bad condition.

However, with sedation dentistry, our dentists at Empire Parkway Dental Group can soothe your fears while you’re in one of their chairs.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

When you visit our dentists in Folsom, CA, they can provide you with a sedative to help you stay calm during examinations and procedures. They can offer sedatives like:

  • Laughing gas
  • Oral sedatives
  • IV sedatives
  • General anesthesia

Usually, laughing gas is enough to relax most people, but some may need stronger assistance. Although both oral and IV sedatives relax people while they remain conscious, some who take it may not remember the examinations or procedures they go through.

Our dentists at Empire Parkway Dental Group, like many other dentists, prefer using laughing gas for patients because it is safe and effective. It helps people relax and also has an analgesic effect because it can help patients not feel pain when a dentist gives them an injection to numb the nerves in their mouths.

How Long Does Laughing Gas Last?

If you are going to have a procedure, we ask that you bring someone to drive you home. While the effects of laughing gas are not long-lasting, once you’re off the sedative, the effect goes away within about five minutes or so, your reaction times may be slower, and you may not be able to think clearly right away.

Laughing gas does not affect the body, so you shouldn’t have any ill effects from it, but we would rather you be careful after you’ve had a procedure. The worse that could happen is some stumbling if you stand up too fast. Otherwise, you should be okay.

For people that are reluctant to go to the dentist, sedation dentistry can help them relax during an examination or procedure, so they may not be as reluctant to go back again.
